Portable Libraries Project
The concept of the Portable Libraries Project and Reading Animation Workshops is simple: to bring books and much needed educational supplies to areas in Vietnam where children have no access to learning tools. It is a gold mine for children around the world who yearn to learn to read, write and become storytellers. For teachers and parents, it is a pathway to knowledge for their children that ultimately can be passed on to future generations.

Today, there are over 83 million people living in Vietnam with two-thirds of the population being young and in need of a good, solid education, not only in Vietnamese but also in English and Japanese, to allow them to be part of developing their country in full equality with other nations.
Children eagerly read new books from the Portable Library donated by Global Village Foundation and literacy training volunteers from Globe Aware

We recently began implementing the Portable Libraries Project in rural areas where students cannot afford to travel to nearby villages with schools. However, one library box cannot be shared amongst dozens of villages, hundreds of schools, and thousands of young minds. Some of the children we most want to reach come from the slums and streets, and some from the tribal and ethnic minorities who live in remote areas. We are presently fortunate enough to work with the Department of Education in Danang in planning a three-day workshop for one hundred teachers from fifty schools in different provinces and poor areas that desperately need this Portable Library Project to reach their school.

GVF wishes to introduce this new Portable Libraries concept to Vietnam and hope that you will participate in joining our team of teachers, children’s book writers, book illustrators, and publishers to stock our first mobile libraries with books, arts supplies, and equipment that we can take to many schools in central Vietnam. We need sponsors and hope that some day we will be able to attract many award-winning manuscripts for children books that can be published in Vietnam and elsewhere. The International Foundation contributed a grant for our first “Portable Library Training Workshop” this August, and Ministry of Education Department in Danang has given its approval for GVF to start the first "Portable Library Project” as a pilot program which began this year (2006). We are in need of ongoing funding to produce the Portable Libary carrying cases, purchase books, art supplies, equipment and to cover the transportation from village to village.

We ask you to please help us develop this important program by sponsoring one or more ”Mobile Libraries”. The cost of one box with books, art supplies and transportation to rural villages is only $500. Your generosity will help so many deserving children receive a much needed and long overdue education. Your company or family name will be inscribed on the beautiful Mobile Library cases as a gift from you to the children.

G o to our Secure Donations page and to invite your friends to join you in supporting the Portable Libraries Project. It's fun and fast to sign up. DONATE NOW!

Que Son Kindergarten
Que Son District is located at the foot of the Truong Son Mountains (Ho Chi Minh Trail). This region endured heavy combat during the Vietnam/ American war and is still trying to recover after many years. With help from the Vietnamese Red Cross, we located one of many condemned or dilapidated schools in the Que Son area and focused our energy towards replacing it. Project made possible through the partnership of GVF and Encinitas California resident Stephen Benedict of Carved Stone International and Micro Star Software. The Que Son Stephen Benedict kindergarten was completed in October 2002.

Hoa Hai School
Hoa Hai is located outside of Danang City, with the famous Marble Mountains and China Beach being part of this region. The school, consisting of first grade and kindergarten, was made possible through the partnership of Global Village Foundation and Hong Kong businessman Friedrich Kuster of Swiss-Sure Ltd. The Hoa Hai Friedrich Kuster School was completed in 2002.
Hoa Cuong Kindergarten
Located in Hoa Cuong, the existing school was often flooded during the constant rain Danang is known for; as a result it was severely damaged by water and mold. The Hoa Cuong School was re-built and expanded to accommodate the growing student body. Made possible through partnership with Stephen Benedict of Carved Stone International and Micro Star. Completed in December 2002.
