Dental Health & Education Project:
GVF is pleased to announce our new Dental Health Education Project (DHEP) initiative, the inspired vision of Dr. Ralph Duffin of Oregon, who recently traveled to Vietnam with a team of dentists and other para-professionals, organized by GVF Board Member Linda Moreau to bring emergency dental care to the children of Ky La village.

Deeply touched by his experience, Dr. Duffin returned to his home in Oregon determined to do something about the great need for dental health education amongst the children in the villages he visited. "If the boat is sinking, it does no good to try to bail the water. One must fix the boat," he said.

The plan is simple: get individuals, particularly dentists and dental clinics throughout the U.S., to contribute the equivalent cost of one filling a month (about $50) towards the creation and distribution of age-appropriate educational materials (such as comic books, posters, DVDs) to the children in villages throughout Vietnam. In addition, train village level teachers, nurses, para-professionals, etc, in dental hygiene education, and teach them basic administration of simple dental disease preventatives such as fluoride, silver nitrate, etc, to prevent or arrest disease at its source, and supply those most in a position to educate and work with the children with the necessary educational and simple "non-professional" dental techniques to carry out the program.

This education work and educational materials will be supplemented by dental care supplies like toothpaste, brushes, floss, etc donated by American manufacturers and their Asian and European counterparts.

We at GVF are tremendously excited by this project, which kicks-off Saturday, August 26th at a fund-raising dinner event in Medford, Oregon.
